ACH / Bank Transfer

Accept ACH payments with lower fees than card transactions. Ideal for B2B, recurring, and high-value payments.

How ACH Works

ACH (Automated Clearing House) payments debit funds directly from a customer's bank account. The process involves:

  1. Customer provides bank routing and account numbers
  2. Payment is initiated and enters pending status
  3. Funds clear through the ACH network (1-3 business days)
  4. Transaction moves to completed or failed

Creating an ACH Payment

const transaction = await apt.transactions.create({
  amount: 50000,       // $500.00 in cents
  currency: 'usd',
  payment_method: 'ach',
  bank_account: {
    routing_number: '110000000',
    account_number: '000123456789',
    account_type: 'checking', // 'checking' or 'savings'
    account_holder: 'Jane Doe',
  },
  description: 'Invoice #1234',
});

Micro-deposit Verification

For first-time bank accounts, two micro-deposits (under $1.00 each) are sent for verification. The customer confirms the amounts to validate ownership.

// Verify micro-deposits
await apt.bankAccounts.verify('ba_abc123', {
  amounts: [32, 45],  // cents
});

ACH Returns

ACH payments can be returned by the customer's bank for insufficient funds, closed accounts, or disputes. Returns typically arrive within 2-5 business days. A payment.failed webhook is sent when a return is processed.

Pricing

ACH transactions are charged at a flat fee per transaction, significantly lower than card processing rates. See our pricing page for current rates.
