ACH return R01 — what to do
Insufficient funds: when to retry and when to stop.
What R01 means
R01 means the customer's bank account had insufficient funds at the time the debit was presented.
Retry rules
- NACHA permits up to 2 retries within 30 calendar days of the original return.
- A 3rd attempt is permitted only with new authorization from the customer.
- Wait at least one business day between retries — same-day retries usually return again.
